What Is Buccal Fat Removal?
The buccal fat pad is found in the middle of your cheek. It is a rounded mass of fat located between facial muscles within the hollow area beneath your cheekbone. Buccal fat pads vary in size, thus impacting the shape of the face. Individuals with larger buccal fat pads tend to have rounder or fuller looking faces.
In the case where buccal fat pads are uncomfortable or unsightly to a patient, a buccal fat removal may be performed to reduce the width and/or alter the shape of the face. Buccal fat removal is often performed with other kinds of plastic surgery procedures, including rhinoplasties (nose jobs), face lifts, lip augmentation, Botox/filler injections and chin implants.
The surgical procedure on its own for buccal fat removal is relatively short and the downtime is minimal. Only local anesthesia is given for buccal fat removal, but general anesthesia is used when combined with other surgeries. Smaller procedures may even be performed in office.
During the procedure, a short incision is made on the inside of the cheek, leaving no external scarring. The surgeon will remove the desired amount of buccal fat from the inside of the cheek. The wound is then closed with dissolvable stiches.
Swelling is the most common reported side effect. After surgery, bruising and facial swelling is normal, but subsides over time throughout recovery. Diet throughout recovery can be modified in stages, starting with a liquid diet, then progressing into soft foods before returning to normal diet. Your doctor will provide additional recovery instructions, as well as instructions to follow before and after your procedure, as needed. Full recovery from the procedure usually takes about 3 weeks.
Eligibility and risk of side effects can only be fully determined with the help of a doctor. To inquire more about buccal fat removal in our office, schedule a consultation with McCoy Moretz today!
Buccal fat removal is a permanent solution, and the only one that directly alters the size of the buccal fat pad. This makes it potentially the most effective procedure in altering the shape of the face for qualified candidates. The results, and thus the increase in confidence, are often tremendous.
