Microneedling with Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)
Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy, is a cosmetic procedure primarily used to minimize the signs of aging. During the procedure, the cosmetic surgeon uses a special tool with needles to prick the skin. This stimulates new collagen production in the skin and helps to reverse many signs of aging, such as wrinkles, age spots, scarring and more.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy may be used in conjunction with microneedling to create additional tightness in the skin and decrease healing time. PRP, also known as autologous conditioned plasma, is a concentrated solution derived from whole blood, centrifuged to remove red blood cells. This concentrate of platelet-rich plasma protein contains growth factors which can help with regenerative processes such as healing.
At Face of Beverly Hills, Dr. McCoy Lee Moretz (Dr. Mac) utilizes microneedling with PRP therapy to help reverse the signs of aging, resulting in patients leaving our office feeling confident and completely satisfied with the results.
Eligibility for Treatment
Most patients who are good candidates for treatment will be in good health with the expectation of treating minor signs of aging. However, you may be ineligible for microneedling if any of the following apply to you:
- Currently pregnant
- Have skin conditions such as rosacea or eczema
- Scar easily or history of poor wound healing
- Use Accutane for acne
- Skin has undergone radiation in the past 12 months
Dr. Moretz can review your medical history with you to help determine if you’re a good candidate for microneedling.
The procedure will typically start with Dr. Moretz or a member of the Face of Beverly Hills’ staff cleansing the skin before applying a topical anesthetic which will sit for 30 minutes before the microneedling itself begins.
The microneedling lasts about 30 minutes with Dr. Moretz (Dr. Mac) applying a professional-grade derma roller to the patient’s face and moving it in strategic motions to stimulate collagen production throughout the face. While the face is numbing, a syringe of blood is drawn from the arm and then put into a centrifuge which separates the PRP from the blood. The PRP is then applied to the treatment area. The PRP is able to strongly penetrate the skin due to the microneedling having the effect of opening up channels into the skin.
Once the procedure is completed, Dr. Mac will apply a balm to the skin to help treat any irritation or redness caused by the microneedling.
Most patients are comfortable driving themselves home following the procedure and, under normal circumstances, this is perfectly safe. As always, exercise caution and use your best judgement.
The most common side effects are typically mild, such as temporary bruising and inflammation. Most of these side effects appear immediately following the procedure and clear up within 4-5 days. While your skin is healing, it is wise to avoid unnecessary sun exposure or using strong skin treatments.
As PRP is made using your own blood, the chance of infection or contamination is quite low. Scarring is another rare, but serious, potential complication. While reviewing your eligibility for treatment, Dr. Mac will talk to you about ways to minimize these risks before, during and in the days immediately following your procedure.
